What is Monero?
Monero (XMR) is an open-source cryptocurrency created in April 2014. Monero’s focus is heavily on privacy and decentralization, aiming to improve existing cryptocurrency privacy control by obscuring sender, recipient, and transaction information while also making the process of mining new coins more egalitarian.
However, this focus on privacy has attracted illicit use from parties interested in evading law enforcement, and the egalitarian approach to mining has made it viable for malicious hackers to covertly mine Monero through embedded code in websites and apps. Despite this, Monero is seen as an industry leader among privacy coins.
